Fears of its repetition .. Did a cyberi attack caused power outages in Spain?
Red Electrica, operating the Electricity Network in Spain, ruled out that the power outage that struck the Iberian Peninsula on Monday, caused by a cyber attack, based on an analysis conducted by the country’s intelligence agency.
Eduardo Preto’s operations director said that the analyzes that were conducted so far show “the exclusion of an incident related to cybersecurity.”
He added, “Since Monday, we had the support of the National Cyber Security Institute and the National Intelligence Center, and we were able this morning to reach that there was no penetration of the control systems of Red Electric that would cause power outages.”
But the Spanish media expressed concern about the future.
A terrifying trip to the Stone Age
A commentator at the Spanish Spanish Radio and Television Authority “RTV E” asked on Tuesday morning: “We are no longer in the morning, but the big question is: Could this happen again? What will happen if something like this continues for a longer period in the future?”
A doctor from Madrid described the interruption as a “terrifying journey to the Stone Age” on Radio Cadena Sir.
On Tuesday, electricity returned largely in both countries, and Red Electric said that about 99.16% of the electricity supply returned to work from 6 am (0400 GMT).
The return of electricity in Portugal
In the neighboring Portugal, Radio “RTB” stated early Tuesday that electricity also returned to most of the houses.
She added, quoting the E-Redez network, that about 95% of the country’s 6.5 million customers returned to the network.
Millions of people in Spain and Portugal remained in the dark on Monday with power outages, telecommunications networks, traffic lights stopped, and elevators hung.
The interruption also disrupted tunnels and trains in both countries, which resumed on Tuesday.
In his television speech on Monday evening, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez did not mention the reason for the interruption, but he stated that he had not ruled out any possibilities.
