The Secretary -General appoints a special envoy to combat the hatred of Islam

A statement issued by the office of a spokesman for the Secretary -General said that Mr. Moratinos will continue to play his current role as a high representative of the United Nations Civilizations Alliance, noting that assuming this double role aims to improve current capabilities and resources and integrate tasks arising from the new state in an existing position.

Since 2019, Mr. Moratinos has been leading the coalition of civilizations, reinforcing his role as a bridge to communicate and a prominent global platform for dialogue.

The statement pointed out that Mr. Moratinos worked closely with the United Nations during his diplomatic career in the Middle East, Africa and Europe, especially during the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in Spain (2004-2010), where his country assumed the presidency of the Security Council and the Presidency of the Security and Cooperation Organization in Europe, the Council of Europe and the European Union Council.

Strong defender of pluralism

In his capacity as minister, Mr. Moratinos was a strong defender of effective pluralism, the coalition of civilizations, and the Group of Friends of the United Nations Reform, and contributed to creating innovative programs for development, health care and women within the United Nations system, doubled his country’s official development assistance.

After his government’s work period, Mr. Moratinos practiced a parliamentary activity (2010-2011), focusing on international work to combat hunger and poverty, enhance food security and the right to food.

As a member of the Global Grand Land Alliance team in Qatar, in 2012, the International Treaty of Food Security and the International Treaty of the Global Alliance for Dry Land.

Earlier in his diplomatic career, Mr. Moratinos held the position of Deputy Director General of North Africa at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1987-1991), Director of the Institute of Cooperation with the Arab World (1991-1993), and the Director General of Foreign Policy of Africa and the Middle East (1993-1996).

After working as an ambassador to Spain in Israel (1996), the European Union appointed him as a special representative of the Middle East peace process (1996-2003). In this role, Mr. Moratinos promoted peace agreements and implemented measures, on behalf of the European Union, to enhance the Arab -Israeli dialogue.

Mr. Moratinos studied law and political science at the University of Comblonesi in Madrid, Spain, then diplomatic studies at the Spanish diplomatic school. Mr. Moratinos is fluent in Spanish, English and French.
