The fires continue for the fourth day in Lattakia and the authorities describe it as “catastrophic”

The Syrian authorities announced on Sunday that the fires witnessed by the coastal and continuous governorate of Lattakia for the fourth consecutive day, about ten thousand hectares of forest lands, while the United Nations called for more international support to control the fire.
On Sunday, teams from the Jordanian Civil Defense arrived in Latakia in western Syria, which witnesses large areas of its countryside fires described by the governorate authorities as “catastrophic”.
A correspondent of Agence France Presse in the Al -Rabiah area in Lattakia reported that the civil defense elements are fighting a fire near the houses, while vast areas of forests and olive trees were burned, and the air was filled with the withdrawal of smoke at a distance.
“Hundreds of thousands of forest trees on an area of ​​about 10,000 hectares in 28 sites have become ash due to these fires,” said a post on the X of X to the Syrian Minister of Emergency and Disaster Minister Raed Al -Saleh.
Later on, Al -Saleh spoke at a press conference in Lattakia about a “real environmental catastrophe”, noting that the announcement of the permanent extinguishing of the fire “needs several days to monitor and follow up.”
Jordanian assistance came in the wake of the intervention of helicopters and fire engines from neighboring Türkiye in the north.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced the participation of the Air Force in fire extinguishing operations, and published footage showing a helicopter during the mobilization of water and then spraying its cargo.
– “More international aid” – The fires came on large forensic areas and agricultural lands, especially near the border with Türkiye, and it required the evacuation of several villages.
“Syria needs more international support to confront the disaster of the fires in the Syrian coast,” said Najat Rushdi’s deputy, Najat Rushdie, via the X platform.
“The United Nations (present) teams on the ground to conduct urgent reviews to determine the size of the disaster and determine the most urgent human needs.”
The Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management announced the entry of “Jordanian teams of Syrian lands through the Nassib border crossing in Daraa Governorate,” noting that Jordanian planes are expected.
The Jordanian Public Security Directorate announced in a statement on Sunday sending a “group of firefighting teams specialized from the civil defense to help” Syria in extinguishing the fires, noting that the firefighting teams were provided with all the necessary modern equipment and mechanisms.
The waste of war and mines impedes the efforts of firefighting teams to reach some areas, according to what the authorities have announced, at a time when controlling the fire requires potential that is not available in the country exhausted from the conflict for more than 14 years.
With the high drought and forest fires in the world as a result of climate change caused by human activity, Syria has been exposed in recent years to severe free waves, a severe rain decline and frequent forest fires.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported in June that Syria “has not witnessed climate conditions for this bad sixty years ago,” warning that unprecedented drought threatens more than 16 million people with food insecurity.
