Gaza – the United Nations calls on Israel to stop “targeting” those trying to secure aid convoys

In a statement, the office also called on the Israeli forces to comply with their obligations under international law to facilitate and protect the delivery of humanitarian aid and other life necessities for the Gaza Strip and inside, noting that these attacks are “It has contributed greatly to the spread of famine among civilians in Gaza.”

The Human Rights Office stated that it was documented Since the beginning of August, 11 incidents of attacks on Palestinians during their work to secure protection for convoys in the north and central Gaza. These incidents have resulted in the death of at least 46 Palestinians, most of them security personnel accompanying aid and supplies caravans, along with some of the assistants, and others were injured.

Reports indicated that the last of these incidents occurred early on the afternoon of August 13.

The Human Rights Office warned that these attacks are part of a frequent pattern, indicating “deliberate targeting” by the Israeli forces of those who are supposed to be civilians and participate in securing life necessities. This comes in the context of a similar pattern of attacks on civil law implementation devices.

Israeli attacks exacerbate chaos

The Human Rights Office stated that, since the beginning of the war, he documented dozens of incidents in which the Israeli forces illegally targeted the civil police who did not participate in the hostilities, which contributed to the collapse of public order on the convoys of supplies, in light of the increasing despair of the population from obtaining food in the face of the “worsening famine”.

The current attacks have contributed to those who are trying to secure humanitarian aid convoys and other supplies to “the exacerbation of chaos and the increased starvation of famine between the Palestinians,” according to the UN office.

The office pointed out that the civil police and security personnel enjoy – under international law – to protect from attacks unless they participate directly in hostilities, which is not covered by securing food aid convoys designated for civilians.

He stressed that Israel – as the occupying force – is bound under international humanitarian law to ensure the security and safety of the population in the occupied Palestinian land, warning that the attacks against civil police and security personnel constitute a direct violation of this responsibility.

1,760 aid seekers kill

At the same time, the Human Rights Office has continued to target and kill Palestinians who are seeking help. From May 27 to August 13, the UN office has documented the killing of at least 1,760 Palestinians while trying to get assistance; 994 of them were killed in the vicinity of the “Gaza Humanitarian Corporation” sites, and 766 along the caravans of supplies. “Most of these crimes were committed by the Israeli military forces.”

The Human Rights Office explained that, despite knowing that there are other armed elements in the same areas, “We do not have information indicating their involvement in these crimes. Therefore, each of these crimes must be investigated urgently and independently, and holding those responsible accountable.”
