The European -American trade agreement stumbled due to a dispute over the regulation of digital platforms

Brussels, August 19 / WAM / The expected trade agreement between the United States and the European Union, which was announced in principle on July 27, faces complex obstacles, most notably the dispute over the list of European digital services “DSA” that imposes strict obligations on major electronic platforms in the field of content supervision.
Although the European Commission made important concessions to secure the agreement, among them the commitment to purchasing large quantities of American energy and accepting customs duties up to 15%, but the digital services file “DSA” remains a red line for Brussels.
The Federation’s institutions stress that the organization of digital platforms cannot be a material for commercial bargaining with Washington, especially since most of these platforms are American.
European sources emphasized that the United States is seeking to extract concessions that limit the strict European regulations in this field, which the Commission categorically rejects.
France and a number of member states considered that the concessions submitted so far in other areas were already painful, and it is not possible to go further.
On the other hand, Brussels and Washington are trying to maintain a positive atmosphere in the negotiations, and the European Commission spokesman, Olof Gail, said that the two parties are completely focused on the completion of the joint statement, adding that the last stage of any negotiation always remains the most difficult.
And between Europe’s adherence to its digital bases and the pressure of the United States to reduce it, the agreement remains a mortgage of an accurate balance between major economic interests and the protection of legislative sovereignty that Brussels is not negotiable.
