The Commissioner for Human Rights calls for decisive steps to prevent genocide in Gaza, and to release the hostages and arbitrary detainees

This came in his briefing before the Human Rights Council regarding the latest global developments, at the opening of the sixtieth session of the Council that started today, Monday, in Geneva.
AndThe UN official said: “Israel’s mass killing for Palestinian civilians in Gaza, its incurred suffering and a comprehensive destruction, and its disability is the arrival of sufficient aid to save lives, and the consequent starvation of civilians; killing them for journalists, United Nations and non -governmental organizations, and committing a war crime after another, all of which shock the conscience of the world.”
He added that “The area screams for peace. Gaza has become a cemetery.”He said that Israel is still suffering from a deep shock after the horrific attacks by Hamas and other armed groups on October 7, and the continued detention of the hostages.
He added: “More militarization, occupation, annexation, and repression will only feed more violence, revenge and terrorism.”.
He stressed the need to move now to end bloody violence, asking: “Where are the decisive steps to prevent genocide? And why do countries not make more efforts to avoid overwhelming crimes?”
He called on the countries to stop the flow of weapons – which vow the violation of the laws of war – to Israel, to exercise the maximum pressure to the ceasefire, the release of all hostages and those arbitrary detainees, in addition to introducing sufficient humanitarian assistance to Gaza – by all the means available to them, and taking decisive measures to oppose Israel’s military control over Gaza and its accelerated annexation of the occupied West Bank.

Sudan
On the situation in Sudan, the Commissioner for Human Rights said that both the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces continue to completely ignore international humanitarian law and human rights law.

He stressed that there is an urgent need to take decisive measures to prevent more terrible crimes, calling on all countries to respect the arms embargo imposed by the Security Council; And pressure on the parties to the conflict to protect civilians, ensure the arrival of humanitarian aid completely, and to resume the dialogue urgently on the ceasefire, end the conflict and return to civil rule.

He stressed the need for negotiations to focus on stopping the fighting on immediate steps to protect civilians and safeguard the rights of the population in the occupied territories, in addition to ending torture and abuse.

ATo retreat from international frameworks and agreements
The High Commissioner for Human Rights warned that disturbing trends undermines human rights, gaining momentum around the world, noting that the glorification of violence is associated with disturbing erosion of international law.
And Turk said: “It is time for countries to wake up, and to move. Throughout the world, the rules of established war – without almost any accountability.”.
And Turk said: “The pro -war propaganda is widespread everywhere, from military offers to escalating speeches. Unfortunately, there are no peace marches, and no peace ministries.”.
Volcker Turk also said that some countries’ retreat from multilateral international frameworks, institutions and agreements is another worrying trend.
He expressed great concern about the arrest warrants issued by the Russian Federation and the sanctions imposed by the United States on judges and officials of the International Criminal Court.
He also said that the illegal detention of United Nations employees in Yemen represents a direct attack on the United Nations system, adding: “They must be released immediately and without registration or condition.”.
And Turk warned that “Some countries have become an extension of the personal authority of their ruler.”Adding that the global and regional frameworks are far from perfection, but the countries need to strengthen and reform them, not to dismantle them.

A selective application of the Human Rights Law
Turk also warned that some countries completely ignore the Human Rights Law, “Or choose and choose, as if our rights were a selective menu.”.
He cited some examples all over the world, including Iran, as it was reported that the authorities arrested hundreds of people, including minorities, on mysterious charges of cooperation or espionage.

He also talked about the increasing attacks on minorities of all kinds, with countries retreat from their obligations to address and prevent discrimination.
And Turk said: “The excessive use of power and the deaths of African descendants at the hands of the law implementation authorities are still continuing in many countries, and this is often rooted in systematic racism.”.
He also warned that “Many countries around the world reduce vital programs that protect women’s rights.”Including support for survivors from violence and access to sexual and reproductive health care.
Hate speech escalated
He talked about hate speech, which is an indication of the escalation of tensions that may lead to violence.
He said that we are witnessing all over the world a growth in anti -Semitism, the hatred of Islam, the hatred of homosexuality, racism, and large -scale media misleading campaigns.
And warned that “The lies and nihilism that fragmentation of societies over the Internet translates into real attacks on real people”.
He explained that freedom of expression is essential, “But it does not protect those who use the expression to stir violence and hatred.”.
He pointed to the increasing number of leaders who are now using freedom of expression to cover their own speech while they are silent about those who oppose them, calling for “Destruction of this, every time”.
A new initiative
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights called for a cross -border movement to defend the international system.
He added: “I hope to work with you on a new initiative, through an alliance between member states, charitable institutions, civil society and other parties, to enhance the human rights system, link violations, abuses and prevent crises.”.
He stressed that this will contribute to achieving the goal of the Secretary -General of the “United Nations 80”, which is to improve coordination and provide better services.
He explained that they will work to hold this alliance on several fronts, including enhancing interaction with all governments, even in the face of sharp differences, encouraging explicit exchanges, maintaining dialogue open, and enhancing the value of human rights for every citizen, and every government, through positive speeches and creative communication.
