Study: 43 billion euros, the European Union losses due to the volatile weather during the summer of 2025

Brussels, on September 15/ WAM/ A recent study showed that the waves of heat, droughts and floods that swept Europe during the summer of 2025, such as the European Union economy in direct and indirect losses amounting to 43 billion euros, equivalent to about 40 billion francs, while experts warned that this cost is only the beginning, as it is expected to reach by 2029 to 126 billion euros.
The study led by researcher Sahsh Othman from the German University of Mannheim, in cooperation with two European Central Bank experts, adopted climate data and economic models to estimate the extent of damage caused by extremist weather phenomena that climate change exacerbates.
Direct losses included the destruction of roads, buildings and agricultural crops due to floods, in addition to indirect losses such as declining production due to reconstruction periods, loss of lives, and the high cost of adaptation programs with increased climate phenomena.
The researcher Othman confirmed that the real cost of extremist climatic events extends beyond their direct effects, noting that the scarcity or destruction of some products due to drought can translate in the medium term into an increase in inflation rates.
The study showed that Spain, France and Italy were the most affected this summer, as each of them exceeded 10 billion euros, while in the medium term it may reach more than 30 billion euros per country, at a time when the waves of heat and drought were doubled in intensity.
As for the countries of Central and Northern Europe, they seemed less affected by the immediate losses, but they face a steady increase in floods in recent years, making their future cost a candidate for height.
The authors of the study warned that the declared numbers may remain without the real reality, because they have not sufficiently counted the complex effects of simultaneous phenomena such as extreme heat with dehydration, nor other effects associated with climate change, especially forest fires.
They pointed out that the estimates of reinsurance companies are usually limited to direct material damage, ignoring the unfinished effects such as the decline in workers’ productivity due to excessive heat.
