Sarkozy, the leader of the French right from 2007 to 2012, was convicted in late September of allowing his two closest aides, when he was Minister of the Interior, Brice d’Hortoufou and Claude Guéant, to communicate with former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, to obtain illegal financing for his election campaign.

Sarkozy faced a series of problems. Legal issues since he failed to be re-elected as president in 2012, while the former president is still popular with the French right.
Sarkozy’s family called on his supporters to show solidarity with him as he left his home in Paris heading to La Santé prison on Tuesday morning, and his lawyers are expected to submit an immediate request for his release.
