The Egyptian government and the United Nations confirm the partnership to enhance comprehensive basic services for migrants and refugees

The Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Affairs and International Security, Ambassador Amr El-Sherbiny, stressed the critical importance of activating the principle of sharing burdens and responsibilities as stated in the Global Compact on Refugees, noting that supporting host countries requires a collective effort and continuous international solidarity, calling for continuing to enhance cooperation and providing the necessary funding to continue providing services to refugees and host communities.

This was stated in a speech by the Assistant Foreign Minister during his participation in a high-level event held by the Egyptian government, represented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Affairs of Egyptians Abroad, and the United Nations system in Egypt in cooperation with the European Union. To highlight the progress made within the framework of the Joint Platform for Migrants and Refugees, a coordinated effort aimed at improving access to basic services and enhancing social cohesion between migrants, refugees and host communities in Egypt, on the sidelines of the Aswan Forum for Peace and Sustainable Development.

The event highlighted the tangible and ongoing impact of the Joint Platform for Migrants and Refugees, which brings together agencies The United Nations, government institutions and development partners; To enhance access to basic services, improve protection systems and enhance social cohesion across Egypt, it also highlighted Egypt’s comprehensive approach to ensuring that all those in need, regardless of nationality, have access to high-quality humanitarian care.

For his part, the Chief of Staff of the International Organization for Migration, Mr. Mohamed Abdel Kiir, said, “Today’s event is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when the government, UN agencies and the international community work hand in hand.” In order to preserve dignity and ensure access to basic services for all migrants, refugees and host communities,” he noted that this integrated partnership reflects a broader commitment to the principles of inclusion and cooperation and a people-centred approach.

He added, “Through the United Nations joint program funded by the European Union, the World Health Organization is implementing the HECP program, which It covers the costs of treating Sudanese patients in the hospitals of the General Authority for Health Care.”

He continued: “In addition, the International Organization for Migration provided convoys of medicines and medical supplies to ten health facilities in Aswan Governorate; “To support the continuity of health services, prevent medicine shortages, and enhance the ability of local hospitals to meet the needs of displaced and vulnerable groups.”

In turn, the European Union Ambassador to Egypt, Angelina Eichhorst, affirmed the Union’s continued support for Egypt’s efforts to improve the services provided to refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants, as well as enhancing the resilience of host communities with the presence of refugees residing in Egypt.

For its part, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Egypt, Ms. Elena Panova, said, “This is a clear model that shows how coordination and partnership can achieve a real and tangible impact…but to maintain this impact, we need more partners.”

She added, “The generous role that Egypt plays in hosting and supporting groups Displaced women should be met with a similar commitment from the international community, and to ensure the sustainability and expansion of this effort, we call for a broader sharing of responsibility between partners from the public and private sectors, and bilateral and multilateral actors, to ensure a just and sustainable response to displacement.” For her part, the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to the Government of Egypt said And the League of Arab States, Dr. Hanan Hamdan, “The joint platform reflects a collective conviction that in light of the escalation of global displacement, scarcity of funding, and unprecedented regional escalation, the national role must be integrated with international solidarity.”

She added, “The platform represents a strong model of Egypt’s leadership through an approach that includes the entire government and the United Nations system.” “In addition to these efforts, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the International Organization for Migration and the World Health Organization are working to expand the scope of primary health care programs as a whole, to address the needs of refugees, migrants and host communities effectively and with tangible results.” Nutrition, community protection, education and livelihoods, to ensure that families are able to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope, and to enhance the ability of national systems to provide the necessary support,” stressing that these collective efforts are the strength of partnership in transforming challenges into opportunities, and enhancing Egypt’s leadership as a model of solidarity and inclusion.

The Egyptian government and the United Nations system in Egypt renewed, at the conclusion of the event, their joint commitment.
