المملكة: More than 1,000 beneficiaries of the self-driving vehicle service in Riyadh

continued General Authority for Transport Operating the Autonomous vehicles in Riyadh, in cooperation with technology and operational partners Uber and WeRide, as part of the initial implementation phase that has witnessed an increasing demand from beneficiaries since its launch, as the number of passengers who have gone through the experience so far has reached more than 1,000 beneficiaries.
The authority confirmed that self-driving vehicles are currently operating across two specific lanes within the Roshen interface and Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University in the city of Riyadh.
/>The service includes several designated stations within each location to facilitate the movement of passengers between pick-up and arrival points, under direct regulatory and technical supervision from the General Transport Authority, and the presence of a safety official inside each vehicle to ensure the highest levels of safety and monitor the performance of smart systems during operation.
Smart and sustainable modes of transportation
The Authority explained that this service represents one of its qualitative initiatives. Aiming to enhance the shift towards smart and sustainable modes of transportation, and adopting the latest technologies in the transportation sector, in line with the objectives of the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics and the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.
She indicated that the operational plans are moving towards gradually expanding the number of routes and vital locations within the city of Riyadh, and increasing the vehicle fleet to more than 20 vehicles by the end of the calendar year. The current one, with the participation of partner government agencies, including the Ministry of Interior, the Communications and Information Technology System, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information, and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Authority.
The Authority called on those wishing to go through the experience to request self-driving vehicles via the Uber application, and enjoy a smart and safe trip that represents the future of transportation in Kingdom.
