المملكة: “Education” approves new mechanisms for evaluating people with visual disabilities that ensure “unified questions” – urgent

The Ministry of Education revealed the mechanisms and procedures for student evaluation People with visual disabilities, in accordance with the executive procedures for the student evaluation regulations in general education, which aim to ensure the achievement of educational justice and provide an evaluation environment that takes into account the individual characteristics of each category of people with disabilities.
The Ministry emphasized in its guide that assessment methods and tools must be compatible with the sensory characteristics available to students with visual disabilities, which depend primarily on touch, hearing, and visual remains.
It indicated that students in this category can take tests using one or more of the following methods: writing and reading in Braille, or the oral method, or by recording questions The testand answering it using appropriate means such as recording tapes or a computer, or with the help of a sighted writer-reader, in addition to benefiting from visual aids for the visually impaired such as magnification lenses, magnifying glass, etc., according to the needs of each student and his individual program.
The procedures also stipulated the formation of a special committee headed by the school principal or his representative and the membership of the specialist in translation into Braille and the subject teacher, in every school in which there is an integration program for the visually impaired.
The committee shall be formed at least two weeks before the exam date to enable it to perform its tasks. These tasks include preparing questions in the appropriate manner for the blind in Braille or in magnified script for the visually impaired, and transferring the blind students’ answers from Braille to regular script so that the subject teacher can correct them, with an emphasis on using the same approved questions for the rest of the students.
The Ministry explained that if the tests contain maps, drawings, or tables, consultation takes place between the subject teacher and the teacher responsible for translation to see if it is possible to produce them using Braille, and if this is not possible, the subject teacher will provide an appropriate alternative that achieves the same educational goal.
Education stressed that the competent committee must provide what enables it to perform its duties while ensuring that the confidentiality of tests and students’ answers is maintained, noting the importance of taking into account flexibility in evaluating students recently transferred from general education, so that a balance is made between their recent learning of skills such as reading and writing in Braille and the requirements of academic subjects, and each student is evaluated according to the level of acquisition of the skill.
The Ministry also stressed the necessity of adapting images when needed in questions in accordance with the characteristics of people with visual disabilities, ensuring the achievement of justice and equality in the evaluation process for all students according to their individual needs.
