Moscow: Withdrawal from the agreement "plutonium" With Washington, we respond to attempts to undermine our interests

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, confirmed today, Thursday, that the withdrawal from the plutonium disposal agreement between Russia and the United States of America is an indication that any attempts to undermine Russia’s military and political interests will be responded firmly.

Zakharova said: – In a press briefing, reported by “Sputnik” agency Russian -: “Withdrawal from this document and its protocols is an indication that any attempts to undermine Russia’s military and political interests and unilaterally review the terms of international treaties concluded between our two countries will receive a firm and consistent response.”

Last Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law terminating the agreement with the United States regarding the disposal of plutonium, which is no longer necessary for defense purposes. The document was published on the official portal for legal publishing in Russia.

According to the document, the law ends the agreement between the governments of the Russian Federation and the United States regarding the disposal of plutonium, which was declared no longer necessary for defense purposes “i.e. the transfer of not less than 34 tons of weaponized plutonium to civilian purposes,” and dealing with it and cooperation in this field, signed in Moscow on August 29, 2000, and in Washington On September 1, 2000.

The attached documents indicated the suspension of the agreement and its protocols in 2016, by decree issued by the Russian President. The reason for this was a radical change in circumstances, such as the imposition of US sanctions against Russia, the adoption of the Ukraine Support Act, which allows intervention in the country’s internal affairs, the expansion of NATO eastward, the strengthening of the US military presence in Eastern European countries, and the intention of the United States to change the plutonium disposal procedures stipulated in the agreement without Russia’s consent.
