The second session of the UAE-Sri Lanka Joint Committee was held in Colombo

Colombo, 6 November / WAM / His Excellency Saeed Al Hajri, Minister of State, and His Excellency Arun Hemachandra, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Employment of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, chaired the work of the second session of the joint committee between the UAE and Sri Lanka, which was held in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo.

The convening of the joint committee reflects the strength of the established relations between the two countries, and the common determination to enhance integration in priority sectors within an institutional framework that ensures effective and sustainable progress.

The two sides welcomed the growing momentum of bilateral economic relations, as the volume of non-oil trade exchange exceeded one billion US dollars in 2024.

The UAE side referred to the visit of His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, to Colombo in April 2025, which witnessed the signing of the memorandum of understanding regarding the establishment of the joint UAE-Sri Lankan Business Council.

During the meeting, a group of vital files of common interest were discussed, most notably the economy, finance, transportation, sports, health, and energy.

The meeting also discussed ways to develop cooperation within multilateral platforms, including the United Nations, the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

In his speech during the meeting, His Excellency Al Hajri expressed the UAE’s appreciation to the Sri Lankan government for hosting and organizing the work of this session, stressing the UAE’s keenness to strengthen its relations with Sri Lanka, in line with the vision of its wise leadership based on sustainable partnership, diversifying the economy, and promoting development in a way that achieves the interests of the two friendly countries and peoples.

The session concluded with both parties affirming their commitment to continue translating common priorities into tangible results within the framework of the Joint Committee’s work.

His Excellency Saeed Al Hajri and His Excellency Arun Hemachandra also signed the minutes of the meeting of the second session of the Joint Committee.

The UAE delegation participating in the meeting included a number of senior officials from Abu Dhabi Ports, the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Ministry of Finance, and Abu Dhabi Aviation.
