Dubai Roads: 10% of the Dubai Metro Blue Line work completed within 5 months

DUBAI, 9th November, 2018 (WAM) – His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, announced the completion of 10% of the Dubai Metro Blue Line project, which extends over a distance of 30 kilometers and includes 14 stations, five months after laying the foundation stone for the project in June 2025.

His Excellency explained that more than 500 international engineers and experts, with the participation of Emirati competencies, along with 3,000 workers, are currently working in 12 sites within the project, with the aim of accelerating the pace of completion to serve the residential, academic, economic and tourist areas in the Emirate of Dubai.

Al Tayer confirmed that work is progressing according to the approved schedule, expecting the completion rate to rise to 30% by the end of 2026, with the project opening on September 9, 2029.

He pointed out that the Dubai Metro Blue Line is one of the most prominent strategic projects implemented by the Authority, as it connects the Red and Green Lines of the Dubai Metro, and serves areas with an estimated population of about one million people by 2040. The project also provides direct flights to Dubai International Airport within 20 minutes, enhancing connectivity between the various regions of the emirate.

His Excellency stressed that the project supports achieving the goals of the Dubai Urban Plan 2040 by connecting five major urban areas with the metro service, enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors, and implementing the concept of the “20-minute city” by making more than 80% of services available to residents within a range that does not exceed twenty minutes of travel. The project also contributes to supporting mass transit-oriented development (TOD) and enhancing Dubai’s economic agenda (D33).

He explained that the total expected benefits of the project amount to more than 56.5 billion dirhams until 2040, as a result of saving time and fuel and reducing accident fatality rates, in addition to increasing the value of land and real estate surrounding the project stations by up to 25%, and contributing to reducing traffic congestion by 20% on the axes served by the Blue Line.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer said that the work of the Dubai Metro Blue Line project is proceeding in accordance with the highest international standards, under the supervision of more than 500 international engineers and experts, with the participation of qualified Emirati professionals, in addition to 3,000 workers distributed in 12 sites along the Blue Line route.

He pointed out that the coalition implementing the project completed more than 3 million hours of work in various project sites without recording any deaths, which reflects the Authority’s strict commitment to occupational safety and construction quality standards, and confirms the efficiency of the field follow-up and integrated management systems that the Authority applies in its major projects.

His Excellency pointed out that the overall completion rate in the project reached 10%, pointing out that the engineering teams are continuing their work at an accelerated pace, as 11 traffic diversions have been implemented so far, and more than 10 additional diversions are scheduled to be implemented in various areas of the project, which will contribute to facilitating the work of constructing stations and ensuring the smooth flow of traffic.

He noted that more than 260 deep foundations have been completed in various locations of the project, and excavation work has begun at the sites of International City stations (1), (2) and (3), with a total excavation exceeding 400 thousand cubic metres. A number of columns for the Academic City station have also been completed, in addition to the implementation of supporting walls in most of the tunnel stations such as the International City Station (1), which paves the way for expanding the scope of excavation work and accelerating the pace of completion in the coming stages.
