المملكة: Jeddah Astronomy: Today, the Earth is witnessing a rare solar event resulting from a class X5 flare

The President of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, Engineer Majid Abu Zahra, explained that today, Wednesday, November 12, 2025, planet Earth is witnessing a rare solar event known as "Solar activity during the current solar cycle.
He pointed out that the event of solar particles at Earth’s level is considered a rare phenomenon in solar physics and space science, as it usually only occurs once or twice during a single solar cycle that extends for about 11 years. This event occurs when solar particles, especially protons, are so high-energy and so fast that they are able to penetrate the Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere, producing secondary particles such as neutrons that can be monitored on the Earth’s surface by neutron detectors.
He added that the space observatory "SOHO has already detected clear interference in its cameras as a result of charged particles colliding with CCD sensors, which is a direct visual effect of the intense cosmic radiation that accompanies such powerful solar events.
Almost non-existent impact in the Arab world
Abu Zahra explained that the impact of this event in the Arab world will be almost non-existent due to the low latitudes, as the Earth’s magnetic field provides natural protection from direct solar radiation, which means that humans and the environment will not be affected. Noticeably, as for satellites, slight temporary interference in communications or sensors may be recorded, but they will not constitute an actual danger and will disappear quickly.
He stressed that this event represents the strongest flow of solar particles to reach Earth in about 20 years, and is clear evidence of the intensification of solar activity associated with the twenty-fifth solar cycle, which is currently experiencing its peak.
