The European Parliament adopts a package of measures to protect farmers in the EU countries

Brussels, 16 December / WAM / Today, the European Parliament adopted a package of enhanced preventive measures aimed at protecting European farmers in the face of the free trade agreement between the European Union and the countries of the Mercosur bloc, which includes Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.

These measures include tightening control mechanisms for products classified as “sensitive” such as beef, poultry and sugar, while providing the possibility of re-imposing customs duties in the event of disruption in the European market.

European representatives chose stricter standards than those proposed by member states, demanding the European Commission intervene if the price of a product imported from Mercosur countries is at least 5 percent lower than its price within the European Union, and if the increase in the volume of duty-free imports exceeds 5 percent, compared to the initial proposal that set these thresholds at 10 percent.

The European Parliament and Member States must now seek a common settlement on this aspect of protectionism.

In light of mounting agricultural mobilization, France is calling for the process to be postponed to 2026, while Germany is calling for a quick signature, at a time when European agricultural unions continue to oppose the agreement.

The agreement aims to facilitate European Union exports of cars and machinery, in exchange for opening the European market more widely to South American products such as meat, sugar, rice, honey, and soybeans, which raises widespread concerns within the European agricultural sectors.
