Libya – The United Nations calls for refraining from any measures that might lead to a division of the judiciary

The mission stated in a statement that the judiciary is an essential pillar for preserving the unity of the Libyan state, warning against any division affecting it that would have far-reaching effects that include all aspects of life in the country.

The mission called on all parties to refrain from any actions that might lead to divisions within the judiciary, or any statements that could be interpreted as provocative and increase tensions. The mission stressed the extreme importance of restraint in the context of the political divisions currently existing within the country.

The UNSMIL mission stressed that a unified and independent judiciary constitutes the cornerstone of the rule of law and democratic governance, and urged all concerned Libyan judicial and political parties to engage in a constructive dialogue to resolve this important issue in a way that preserves the unity of the judicial institution and serves the supreme national interest of all of Libya.

The mission confirmed that it stands ready to provide any support that may be requested of it to ensure the success of any Libyan efforts based on consensus, with the aim of protecting the unity of the judiciary and strengthening the rule of law.
