About 60 kilometers away, another avalanche swept two skiers off the trail in the Arèche-Beaufort resort, a local official told AFP.

One of the skiers could not be revived, while the second was taken to hospital suffering from serious head injuries, according to regional official Jean-Pierre Mirabell.

French meteorologists had warned of the risk of on the weekend.

The two skiers who died in Valdisere were not equipped with avalanche transceivers, and were found thanks to their mobile phones.
