After threats and intimidation…Trump backs down from punishing European countries over Greenland

US President Donald Trump said that he is canceling his threat to impose customs duties on several European countries as part of his effort to impose American control over Greenland, after he reached an agreement with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on a “framework agreement” on security in the Arctic.

Trump’s announcement on Wednesday on social media came shortly after he said in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos that he was backing down from his threat to use military force to seize the Danish island, which he says is critical to American national security.

Trump said on Social Truth after announcing the agreement: “I will not impose the fees that were scheduled to take effect on February 1.” He added that future talks will focus on extending the American Golden Dome missile system to include the island of Greenland.

Trump added that he will announce new information about the matter, after the talks that will be held by Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and others, without revealing the date of the talks, the parties participating in them, or the location of them.
