This comes according to what two diplomatic and security sources told Agence France-Presse on Thursday, with reference to the suspension of all flights to Tigray.
Battles of the Ethiopian army and Tigray forces
The two sources working in Ethiopia, requesting anonymity, said that battles took place in Tsmelt in western Tigray, an area also claimed by forces from the neighboring Amhara region.
They stated that the airlines Ethiopian, the only one flying planes to Tigray, suspended flights to the region.
Direct clashes occurred between the federal army and Tigray forces in November 2025 in the neighboring Afar region.
Conflict in Ethiopia
These tensions increase the risk of resuming battles after a bloody war between the army and Tigray People’s Liberation Front forces between November 2020 and November 2022.
At least 600,000 people were killed in this war, according to the African Union, which are estimates that experts consider lower than reality.
