3,800 male and female students participate in the first phase of "Dubai Schools Games"

Dubai, February 25, 2017 – The organizing committee for the “Maidea Dubai School Games” competitions announced the participation of more than 3,800 students from public and private schools in the first phase of the event, which is the largest of its kind in the emirate, and is organized by the Dubai Sports Council in cooperation with ESM, the operating partner, to conclude with an awards ceremony next June.
The tournament includes football, athletics, fencing, and laser shooting competitions, as part of an approach aimed at strengthening the base of sports practice in schools and discovering promising talents.
Issa Sharif, Director of the Sports Events Department at the Dubai Sports Council, confirmed that the tournament continues to record remarkable growth that reflects the Council’s plans to provide a stimulating environment for school sports, noting that these tournaments represent a foundational station for selecting and refining talent, which contributes to creating future Olympic champions.
He added that the tournament represents a pioneering platform for preparing future champions, enhances efforts to develop sports in the school sector as the base of the sports pyramid, and gives clubs the opportunity to select the best players and include them in their teams in various games, wishing success to all participants.
The football championship competitions, which were held on Al-Nasr Club stadiums, witnessed the participation of 2,556 students representing 225 teams, while the number of participants in the final rounds reached 1,440 students from 38 schools, in age groups from U9 to U16 for boys and girls.
The fencing competitions were held at the GEMS School of Research and Innovation with the participation of 58 male and female players from 30 schools, while the laser shooting competitions concluded with the participation of 48 students from 15 schools, in a sport that combines running and shooting accuracy.
In athletics, 1,146 male and female students participated in the competitions held at the Dubai Police Officers Club track in the Al Jaddaf area, with the participation of 129 teams, and 600 male and female athletes from 40 schools qualified for the finals. The competitions were divided into sprinting, jumping and throwing.
