In implementation of the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister – may God protect them -, The medical and surgical team of the Saudi Program for Conjoined Twins, led by His Excellency the General Supervisor of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center and the head of the team, Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Rabiah, this afternoon, the operation to separate the Somali conjoined twins. "Rahma and Ramla" At King Abdullah Specialist Hospital for Children in King Abdulaziz Medical City at the Ministry of the National Guard in Riyadh.
Details of the twins’ case
Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabiah explained that the twins are 13 months old and came to the Kingdom on May 6, 2025 AD, and are attached at the lower abdomen and pelvis and each of them has two complete lower limbs, as careful medical examinations showed their involvement in the colon and rectum, with an overlap in the urinary systems. And reproductive and involvement in the pelvic bone, after a series of Specialized examinations and intensive meetings of the medical team.
It was revealed that the twins "Sand" Suffering from complete atrophy of the kidneys with complete renal failure; Which requires dialysis immediately after class, while she suffers "mercy" There is complete atrophy in the left kidney, and there are cysts in the right kidney, which is currently functioning properly. Which requires careful monitoring after the operation to ensure that it continues to perform its functions.
Approved medical procedures
His Excellency stated that the expected risk rate reaches 40% due to the medical challenges associated with the case, noting that the case was explained in detail to the parents of the twins, who expressed their understanding of the surgical team’s plan, noting that the operation was planned to be conducted in 8 stages and is expected to take approximately 14 hours, with the participation of 36 consultants, specialists and nursing staff. And technicians in the specialties of anesthesia, pediatric surgery, pediatric urology, orthopedic surgery, and plastic surgery.
It is noteworthy that during the past (35) years, the medical team has studied and evaluated (156) cases, and separated (68) conjoined twins from (28) countries, within the Saudi program for separating conjoined twins.
Dr. Al-Rabiah presented the petition, in his name and on behalf of the members of the medical and surgical team.
