Claude Le Roy reveals a “hidden reason” behind withdrawing the African Cup from Senegal and giving it to Morocco

The former French coach of Senegal, Claude Le Roy, attacked the president of the Confederation of African Football, South African Patrice Motsepe, accusing him of being behind the decision to withdraw the African Cup of Nations title from Senegal and blaming it to Morocco against the backdrop of the events that accompanied the final match, in which the “Lions of Teranga” team was later crowned after winning in extra time 1-0.

Claude Le Roy told the French newspaper L’Equipe, “I would not have imagined for a single second that the Confederation of African Football could go this far down the path of absurdity.”
He added, “But when you see how the Confederation of African Football is managed today under the leadership of Patrice Motsepe, who is basically subordinate to Gianni Infantino (FIFA President), you understand some things better. From the beginning, there was someone determined to award the cup to Morocco. It is true that Morocco presented a great tournament and deserved to be crowned overall, but in the final, Senegal was the better (1-0 after extra time).”
The 78-year-old coach, who led Senegal to the quarter-finals of the continental competition in 1992 and Cameroon to the title in 1988, continued: “We are in the midst of an electoral period, so we can imagine all sorts of things happening, before the decision is finally made in favor of crowning Morocco champion.”
He continued, “Behind all of this, there are a lot of arrangements and behind the scenes. I believe that the story is not over yet, and that Senegal will regain its rights in the end. But, unfortunately, this decision once again harms the image of the Confederation of African Football. There will be an appeals committee, and then the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) may intervene later. But I think that this decision, unfortunately for a continent that I love very much, will arouse the ridicule of the entire football world.”
