He pointed out that the event, which was launched by the World Wide Fund for Nature in 2007, has transformed from a symbolic expression into a global platform, and added that the initiative currently sheds light on pressing issues, such as climate change, the loss of biodiversity, and excessive consumption of resources.
Abu Zahra revealed the expected wide participation from major global cities, which includes extinguishing prominent landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Sydney Opera House, pointing at the same time to the increasing presence of Arab countries across the world. He stressed that the real impact of the initiative goes beyond the 60 minutes, to create sustainable awareness of the importance of rationalizing electricity and reducing the carbon footprint, stressing that the daily commitment to turning off unnecessary devices achieves a tangible cumulative effect in reducing emissions globally.
He touched on this year’s edition’s endeavor to encourage practical steps that go beyond symbolism, such as using energy-saving lamps and reducing reliance on plastic, considering that turning off the lights tonight represents a bright message of awareness that Protecting the Earth is a shared responsibility among all.
