"UAE Olympic" Reviews preparations for participation in the Youth Olympics in Dakar

Dubai, April 2, 2017 – The UAE Olympic Committee held a joint meeting yesterday evening with sports federations via video communication technology, to follow up on preparations for participation in the fourth edition of the Youth Olympic Games, scheduled to be held in the city of Dakar in the Republic of Senegal during the period from October 31 to November 13 of this year.
His Excellency Mohammed bin Darwish, Executive Director of the Olympic Committee, stressed the importance of this sporting event, in which the UAE has been keen to participate since its first edition, which was held in Singapore in 2010.
He pointed out the country’s participation in the second edition in 2014 in the Chinese city of Nanjing, then the third edition in 2018 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which witnessed the achievement of the country’s first medal by knight Omar Al Marzouqi by winning a silver medal in the show jumping competitions, pointing out that the UAE has become the first Gulf country to participate in the Winter Youth Olympic Games, which were organized in Gangwon, Republic of Korea in 2024.
During the meeting, Ibn Darwish reviewed the medical procedures followed before travel, during participation, and after return, through coordination between the Sports Medicine Committee and the Medical Committee affiliated with the tournament organizing committee, with the aim of following up on health developments and adhering to the instructions issued by the competent authorities inside and outside the country.
He stressed that the UAE’s participation in the fourth edition of the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal is of special importance, as it is the largest in terms of the number of sports, after receiving letters from the organizing committee stating that a number of seats were available for the country’s athletes, based on their results in the various qualifying tournaments through which they succeeded in collecting the required points.
His Excellency explained that one of the most prominent of these participations was the Asian Youth Games held in the Kingdom of Bahrain, during which the UAE achieved the best continental achievement with 31 colorful medals, which reflects the magnitude of the efforts made by the athletes and the systematic planning of the sports federations.
The meeting also witnessed a review of the tournament data and the number of games included in it, which amount to 25 sports distributed in three cities, with the participation of about 2,700 male and female athletes.
For his part, Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Director of the Committee’s Technical and Sports Affairs Department, reviewed the available seats in a number of sports in coordination with the International Olympic Committee and the Organizing Committee, in addition to discussing the readiness of the base of qualified athletes to participate in cooperation with the national federations.
