Discovery of a 4,000-year-old water canal network in central China

BEIJING, April 10, 2017 (WAM) – Local authorities in Henan Province, central China, announced the discovery of an artificial system of water channels dating back about 4,000 years, providing important evidence of organizational capacity and urban planning at the state level during the Xia Dynasty (2070-1600 BC), the oldest known dynasty in China.
The said discovery was announced during a forum showcasing the latest archaeological discoveries in the province.
Local archaeologist Ma Long, who is leading excavations at the site, said that two new artificial trenches dating back to the early Xia Dynasty were identified at the site, each about three meters wide with a confirmed length of more than 120 metres. The trenches running from north to south were connected by a trench approximately 10 meters wide, to form a complete water supply and drainage network and a spatial zoning system.
