The German Navy is making preparations to participate in securing the Strait of Hormuz

The German Navy is concretely preparing to participate in a possible mission in the Strait of Hormuz, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced Sunday evening.
In statements on a program on German television channel ARD, the minister, who belongs to the Social Democratic Party, said: “We are planning for this, and studying different scenarios, including potential partners and how to form such a process.”
He added that he would not be performing his duties as Minister of Defense to the fullest extent if his ministry had not already been engaged in this planning work in a tangible way for a long time.
However, Pistorius emphasized that the matter is still in the planning stage, stressing that the preconditions for such a mission are a permanent ceasefire in the region, international legal cover, and a mandate from the German Parliament. “We still have a long time to get there,” he said.
Pistorius pointed to the competence of the German Navy in the field of mine clearance, saying: “We traditionally possess within NATO leadership capabilities in mine detection, which is a reference for other countries, so we will naturally play a role once the remaining conditions are met.”
The minister explained that the matter is not merely about symbolism or sending a signal to US President Donald Trump, saying: “We have always said that this is not our war, but we feel its consequences. Therefore, when it comes to freedom of navigation, we must make our contribution to this mission.”
The Minister of Defense stated that if the German Navy participated in a mine-clearing operation in the Strait of Hormuz, it would be forced to postpone other tasks and set new priorities. He continued: “We can only use our equipment for one purpose at a time.”
