Sánchez said at an election rally in Andalusia: "Next Tuesday, the Spanish government will submit a proposal to Europe aimed at nullifying the association agreement between the European Union and Israel, because a government that violates international law cannot be a partner of the European Union."

The Association Agreement between the European Union and the occupying entity, which entered into force in 2000, includes a clause that makes its implementation conditional on respect for human rights.
It appealed Spain first entered into the agreement in February 2024, when Sánchez and the then Irish Prime Minister sent a joint letter to the European Commission, requesting an assessment of Israel’s compliance with its human rights obligations following the start of the war in Gaza.
Sánchez has since gradually hardened his position on Israel, particularly with the war in Lebanon.

Review of the Association Agreement

Sánchez’s statement on Sunday followed a letter sent by Ireland. Slovenia and Spain to the European Commission on Friday, requesting "Review of the EU-Israel Association Agreement at the next meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council".
