Iran calls on the United Nations to condemn Washington’s detention of its cargo ship
You requested Iran from United Nations condemning the US detention on Monday Iranian shipping ship "Tosca"describing this as a piracy operation and a clear violation of the ceasefire between Tehran and Washington.
The President announced Donald Trump on Sunday that a US destroyer fired on a cargo ship flying the Iranian flag in the Gulf of Oman and then took control of it, after it tried to break a naval blockade imposed by the United States.
Piracy and a dangerous escalation
The Iranian ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Irani, wrote on Tuesday in a letter to the Security Council and the Secretary-General, that this behavior is an act of piracy, and represents a dangerous escalation that greatly jeopardizes the security of vital shipping lanes."
He continued: "In addition, this unlawful act constitutes a clear violation of the ceasefire agreed upon on 8 April, and an act of aggression under the Charter of the United Nations.".
He added in the letter that Iran calls on the United Nations, especially the Security Council and the Secretary-General, to take an immediate, firm and principled position by condemning this aggressive act, ensuring that those responsible for it are held accountable, and demanding that the United States release the ship, its crew, and their families.
