Wednesday, May 27, the first day of Eid Al-Adha

The Sharjah Academy for Space and Astronomy, affiliated with the University of Sharjah, announced the results of the astronomical calculations for detecting the crescent of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah for the year 1447 AH, indicating that Wednesday, May 27, 2026, will be the first day of the blessed Eid al-Adha, astronomically.

The Academy explained in its report that the Day of Arafah (9 Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 AH) will fall on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, while it is expected to fall on Monday, May 18, 2026, the first of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah.

According to astronomical calculations, the surface conjunction of the crescent will occur at 00:17 am on Sunday, May 17, 2026 (29 Dhul-Qi’dah 1447 AH) UAE time, and the age of the crescent, at sunset on the same day, will be 18 hours and 39 minutes, with a residence period of 57 minutes, which is sufficient time to see it with the naked eye if the skies are clear.

Director of the Sharjah Academy for Space and Astronomy, Dr. Hamid Majoul Al Nuaimi, said that the Academy provided the Emirates Council for Sharia Fatwa with this scientific data in support of its efforts to investigate crescent moons and make Sharia decisions based on integration between scientific data and Sharia rulings.

At the conclusion of its statement, the Academy affirmed that these calculations fall within the scientific and astronomical framework, stressing that the official announcement of the beginning of the Hijri months and religious occasions remains the purview of the competent official and legitimate authorities in the country.
