Modric suffers a broken cheekbone

Veteran Croatian Luka Modric, the Italian Milan midfielder, will undergo surgery after suffering a fracture in his cheekbone following a head collision during his team’s match with Juventus, which ended in a goalless draw, according to what the Lombard club announced Monday.
Modric fell to the ground after a collision with Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli, and then left the field with an ice pack on his face.
A statement issued by Milan said: “The tests conducted today showed a fracture in his left cheekbone, which requires surgery within the next few hours. More details will be announced after the operation.”
Milan did not specify the duration of Modric’s absence, who signed a one-year contract with the seven-time European champion last summer, coming from Spanish Real Madrid.
The 40-year-old is also scheduled to participate with his country’s national team in the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, provided that he recovers in time.
Milan is seeking to return to the Champions League, as it has four matches remaining in the Italian League this season.
Coach Massimiliano Allegri’s team is in third place with 67 points, 6 points ahead of fifth-placed Como, and will face Sassuolo away from home next Sunday.
