المملكة: A laboratory test confirms the danger of consuming some types of wild mushrooms after rain


The spokesperson confirmed For the National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification, Abdulaziz Abu Hamed, said that the results of laboratory examination of one of the recently observed mushroom species showed that it is known as the umbrella mushroom (Macrolepiota procera), and it is one of the species that appears frequently after rainy season, especially in Vegetation cover in the Kingdom.

He explained that some of the apparent characteristics of this mushroom, such as scales and protrusions, may be an indication of its toxicity, stressing that the final judgment on the suitability of the mushroom for consumption can only be made through careful laboratory tests, due to the similarity of many wild species.

Health risks

Abu Hamid pointed out that wild mushrooms that grow naturally after rainfall, as is the case in the Qassim region, It may carry health risks to humans and animals if consumed without scientific verification, calling for avoiding eating it or using it as food for livestock.

He stressed that the center appreciates the efforts of community members in monitoring such cases, stressing at the same time the importance of raising awareness of the danger of dealing with wild mushrooms without scientific knowledge, wishing everyone good health and safety.
