An agreement to support research on the Emirates Mars Exploration Mission between Emirates Space and New York Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, June 16, 2017 (WAM) – The Emirates Space Agency and New York University Abu Dhabi signed a sponsorship agreement to support research work for the research project “Studies of the Atmosphere and Surface of Mars Using Data from the Emirates Mars Exploration Mission.”
The signing of the agreement was attended by His Excellency Engineer Salem Butti Al Qubaisi, Director General of the UAE Space Agency, Fabio Piano, Acting Vice President of New York University, and Marna Losada, Senior Vice Dean of the University, Research Affairs, along with a number of officials and employees from both sides.
His Excellency Engineer Salem Al Qubaisi stressed that the agreement reflects the UAE’s commitment to investing in scientific and research competencies, and empowering future generations of researchers to contribute to promoting scientific discoveries with a global impact.
He added: “Our cooperation with New York University Abu Dhabi represents an important step towards utilizing the scientific data of the Emirates Mars Exploration Mission to support advanced research and enhance our understanding of the planet Mars and its atmosphere. As the mission continues in its phase extending until 2028, we continue to employ its scientific outputs to support advanced research, enhance international scientific cooperation, and consolidate the UAE’s vision of building a sustainable space sector based on research, innovation and developing national capabilities.”
For his part, Fabio Piano said: “The agreement with the UAE Space Agency reflects our joint commitment to supporting the process of scientific discoveries through research, innovation and cooperation. This partnership will support the efforts of the Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences at New York University Abu Dhabi, in harnessing the exceptional scientific data generated by the Emirates Mars Mission. It will also contribute to supporting the UAE’s vision in the fields of space exploration, scientific research and innovation.”
The agreement aims to support research work within the project “Studies of the Atmosphere and Surface of Mars Using Data from the Emirates Mars Exploration Mission,” which contributes to benefiting from the mission’s data and using it to develop research related to the planet Mars.
The agreement is in line with the objectives of the UAE Space Agency and the National Space Strategy 2031, which aims to develop the science, technology and innovation system, enhance the UAE’s position in the space sector at the regional and global levels, and consolidate its presence as a major contributor to supporting advanced scientific research in this field.
The agreement confirms the continuation of national efforts to strengthen academic and scientific partnerships, and to employ the results of UAE space missions to support research and development, which contributes to consolidating the UAE’s leadership in the field of space science and enhancing its presence in the production of advanced scientific knowledge.
