Rashid Al-Humairi: Artificial intelligence opens new horizons for enhancing humanitarian response and avoiding disasters
Abu Dhabi, June 18 / WAM / His Excellency Rashid Al Himairi, Executive Director of Strategic Planning and Communication at the Emirates Humanitarian Aid Agency, confirmed that the UAE has a long history of providing humanitarian support and aid to the most needy groups, extending back to before the establishment of the Federation, pointing to the rapid developments in artificial intelligence technologies that today provide unprecedented opportunities to enhance the efficiency of humanitarian work and proactive response to crises.
He said in a statement on the sidelines of the dialogue session on “Strengthening the Proactive Humanitarian Action System,” that artificial intelligence has become capable of analyzing huge amounts of data and complex patterns related to humanitarian crises, which contributes to building more accurate future plans to respond to the challenges resulting from climate change, including droughts, floods, and heavy rains, in addition to monitoring areas of displacement and the risks of food insecurity.
He explained that these capabilities are being used in this way for the first time in the field of humanitarian work, pointing out that current discussions focus on expanding the scope of artificial intelligence applications in this vital sector, in a way that enhances the readiness of humanitarian agencies and their ability to deal with crises before they occur.
He added that evaluating the impact of humanitarian responses traditionally depends on monitoring and evaluation standards and measuring the benefit of those affected by aid, but the potential of artificial intelligence today allows the development of a new concept for measuring the humanitarian impact, which is to monitor the success of efforts in preventing the occurrence of disasters or limiting the transformation of crises into humanitarian disasters, based on proactive indicators and data that support decision makers and workers in the humanitarian field, and contribute to providing more effective and sustainable responses.
