A UN resolution to strengthen mechanisms for prosecuting attackers of peacekeeping forces around the world

The vote on the text submitted by Pakistan came after a series of bloody attacks in recent months targeting United Nations peacekeeping forces around the world.
Since the beginning of March, 7 Blue Berets working within the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have been killed.
In December, 6 Bangladeshi peacekeeping force members were killed in a march attack on a besieged city in South Sudan.

Unanimous Security Council approval

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, said: In several missions, attacks against United Nations peacekeeping forces have increased in number and complexity.
He added: This draft resolution aims to push the Council beyond merely issuing statements condemning these attacks.
The resolution received unanimous support from the Council’s 15 members, and was supported by more than 150 United Nations member states.
/>The resolution stipulates that in the event of an attack, UN Secretary-General António Guterres must quickly collect records on what happened and share them with host countries while they conduct their investigations into the incident.

Supporting possible criminal proceedings

To facilitate UN investigations, the Secretary-General should also appoint a high-level official to coordinate these investigations and support possible criminal proceedings with the countries concerned, according to the text of the resolution.
According to UN data, since 1948, about 4,500 people have been killed. Members of the United Nations peacekeeping forces while performing their duty.
These members, who were from 134 nationalities, most of them died in accidents or due to illness, but 1,150 were killed in what the United Nations describes as hostile acts.
