Manchester City officially announces the appointment of Enzo Maresca as technical director until 2029

Manchester, June 29 / WAM / Manchester City officially announced today the appointment of Italian Enzo Maresca as technical director of the first football team, with a contract extending three seasons until June 2029, to return to the club for the third time in his coaching career, after previous experiences within the City system during which he achieved many successes.

Maresca has a proven record within Manchester City, as he took over the leadership of the elite U-21 team in the club’s academy in 2020, and in his first season he led it to win the English Premier League title for the youth category, after topping the table by 14 points, achieving 17 victories and five draws against only two defeats.

After a training period with the Italian club Parma, “Maresca” returned to Manchester City in 2022 to work as an assistant to the Spanish Pep Guardiola, and contributed within the technical staff in leading the team to its most successful seasons throughout its 132-year history, by achieving the historic treble.

In the summer of the same year, he took over coaching Leicester City, leading them to win the English Championship title, and ensuring a direct return to the English Premier League in his only season with the team, before moving to Chelsea.

The Italian coach continued his successes with Chelsea, where he led the team to win the European Conference League title and secure qualification for the Champions League in his first season at Stamford Bridge, before concluding his career with the club by winning the Club World Cup title last summer in the United States of America.

For his part, His Excellency Khaldoun Al-Mubarak, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Manchester City, confirmed that Marisca has the personality, passion and intelligence that matches the club’s ambitions, indicating that his return represents a natural step for both parties in light of their shared vision and desire for continued success.

He added that the Italian coach will lead a team and a football system that suits his philosophy and style, expressing everyone’s aspiration to see the addition he will make in the next stage, and said: “Welcome home, Enzo.”

Maresca said, after signing the contract: “Manchester City is a club I know well, and leading it technically is an exceptional opportunity. The club is distinguished by its high standards and a culture based on innovation and thoughtful planning, which provides the ideal environment for any coach.”

He added: “This will be my third term here, and I am well aware of the club’s requirements and expectations, and I look forward to working with the players to achieve victories, present beautiful football worthy of Manchester City, and enjoy the challenges ahead.”

In turn, Ferran Soriano, CEO of Manchester City, said that Maresca was the first choice in all stages of the evaluation, due to his artistic vision, leadership personality, integrity and passion, in addition to the successes he achieved with Chelsea and Leicester City, and his distinguished record within Manchester City, whether with the club’s academy or during his contribution to the historic treble season.

Soriano stressed that the club will provide the new coach with all the ingredients for success, expressing his confidence in his ability to leave a positive mark during the next stage of Manchester City’s journey.
