Along with Trump, the Spanish Prime Minister intends to attend the 2026 World Cup final

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and US President Donald Trump will meet in the FIFA World Cup final next Sunday, as relations between the two leaders remain tense due to defense spending.

The Spanish Prime Minister’s Office said on Friday that Sanchez will be in New Jersey to attend the match, where Trump may hand over the cup to the Spanish national team, which will face Argentina if it wins.

Trump has repeatedly criticized Spain for the government’s refusal to adhere to NATO’s goal of spending 5% of GDP on defense, and has made numerous threats of retaliatory trade measures, according to Reuters.

The most recent came earlier this month during the NATO summit in Ankara, when Trump asked his advisors to “sever all trade relations with Spain, including visits.”

But the US President later softened his tone and said that Spain had fulfilled the request for payments and was “very generous,” a statement that the Sanchez government interpreted as a sign of Madrid’s compliance with the agreed-upon defense spending target of 2% of GDP.
