Sudan – Insecurity and violence displace 20,000 people in Darfur

At the daily press conference, UN Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq said that UN field partners reported that insecurity and violence among local communities in the Darfur region had recently displaced more than 20,000 people, with many of them in need of urgent support.

He added: “We renew our call to all parties to protect civilians and facilitate rapid, safe, unhindered and sustainable access to humanitarian aid.”.

Fighting cholera

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has warned that cholera is spreading in Sudan, where more than two thousand suspected cases and 170 deaths have been recorded since May, and most of these cases are concentrated in the Kordofan region.

He stressed that despite the challenges, the United Nations and its partners continue to intensify efforts to respond to cholera, supporting nearly 80 epidemiological surveillance sites, 16 treatment centers, and eight oral irrigation points, in addition to implementing preventive activities targeting more than 270,000 people in the affected areas.

But the UN office warned that the lack of funding limits the scope of the response, calling on donors to provide additional funding.

He recalled that Sudan’s humanitarian appeal for this year has received approximately 40% funding, with $1.1 billion received out of the $2.9 billion requested.
