After deadly storms.. Greece declares a state of emergency on two islands
Rescue teams, with the help of the army and local authorities, rescued many elderly residents in areas affected by floods after strong storms and heavy rains over the weekend caused cars to overturn, cut off electricity, and damaged roads.
Two men died in a village flooded on the island of Limnos, where dozens of citizens were evacuated and taken to hotels in the island’s main port.
Climate change in Greece
Vassilis Kikilias, Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, urged residents in areas hit by the storm to comply with evacuation orders, which are announced with telephone warnings.
The minister told Sky TV: “Heeding warnings that may be excessive is a thousand times better than facing a tragedy.”
Kikilias pointed to climate change as the reason for worsening severe weather conditions in Greece in recent years, including an unprecedented series of heat waves that caused forest fires, severe drought and massive floods in central Greece in 2023.
Train traffic was disrupted on the Greek mainland today, Monday, and warnings of bad weather are still in place on the eastern islands of the Aegean Sea, as well as in parts of central and southern mainland Greece.
