Events and pictures: 29 people were killed in floods in Thailand

The death toll from floods in southern Thailand has risen to 29 people, the National Disaster Management Agency reported yesterday.

The floods, which began in late November, affected about 155,000 families, according to the authorities, while more than 33,000 people were displaced as a result of the floods.

The Thai government deployed rescue teams to help the affected residents, and also deployed pumps to withdraw water from some areas.

In northern Malaysia, disaster management officials reported that five people were killed.

While Thailand experiences annual monsoon rains, scientists report that climate change is leading to more severe weather conditions, which could increase the likelihood of devastating floods. Cyclone Yagi struck northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Burma (Myanmar), causing floods and landslides that killed hundreds and left dozens missing.
