Philippines.. Canlaon volcano terrifies residents and prompts them to flee

A column of hot ash and gases, up to three kilometers high, forced residents to seek shelter after the Kanlaon volcano erupted in the Philippines on Monday.
There were no immediate reports of injuries in the latest eruption, on Mount Kanlaon in central Negros Island.

It obscured motorists’ vision and raised health concerns. “It sounded like a cannon strike,” said Jose Chubasco Cárdenas, mayor of the city of Canlaon, which is located southeast of the volcano site.
“There have been many eruptions before, but this time it was very loud,” he added. Disaster response officials raised the danger level around Kanlaon due to “a greater risk of dangerous volcanic activity.”

Evacuation of village residents

They also ordered the evacuation of residents of villages within a radius of six kilometers (3.7 miles) from the center.
About 100 people fled to emergency shelters in Canlaon by nightfall after the afternoon volcanic eruption.
He explained that the number of displaced people may reach more than two thousand people, due to stronger possibilities of more eruptions.
