Immigration is pushing America’s population growth to the highest rate in 23 years
Immigration to the United States in 2024 has pushed the country’s population growth to the fastest rate in 23 years, with the population exceeding 340 million people, the US Census Bureau said Thursday.
According to annual population estimates, the population growth rate of 1% this year is the highest since 2001, and came in clear contradiction with the lowest rate of 0.2% in 2021 at the height of the pandemic restrictions on travel to the United States.

Rising migration
Immigration increased this year by 2.8 million people, partly due to a new method of counting that adds people who were brought into the country for humanitarian reasons.
Net international migration accounted for 84% of the increase in the country’s population by 3.3 million people between 2023 and 2024.
The number of births exceeded the number of deaths in the United States by about 519,000 between 2023 and 2024, which is an improvement compared to the historical decline in 2021, which reached 146,000, but it is much lower than the high rates witnessed in previous decades.
