The Greek Coast Guard announced that eight people died and 18 others were rescued when a speedboat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of the island of Rhodes.

The Greek authorities stated that rescue efforts were underway, with the participation of coast guard ships and a helicopter, as it was not clear whether there were other passengers missing.
Rhodes, one of the large Greek islands located near the Turkish coast, is a busy route for illegal smuggling in the eastern Mediterranean.
