Because of the prison system, “American Justice” sues the state of Louisiana
What federal officials say is a pattern of “systematic over-detention” that violates prisoners’ rights and costs taxpayers millions of dollars annually.
Prisons in America
The Justice Department claims that since at least 2012, more than a quarter of people scheduled for release from Louisiana prisons have been held past their release date.
The Justice Department warned Louisiana officials last year that the state could face a lawsuit if the problems were not resolved.
But the department’s lawyers say the state’s “marginal efforts” to address these issues were “inadequate” and showed “deliberate indifference” to the constitutional rights of incarcerated individuals.
“The right to individual liberty includes the right to be released from prison at the specified time after the expiration of the term set by the court,” Assistant District Attorney Christine Clark said in a statement announcing the lawsuit.
She continued, “Incarcerating people indefinitely… not only infringes on individual freedom, but it also erodes public confidence in the fair and just application of our laws.”
Trump issues
On the other hand, the US Department of Justice demanded that the case against US President-elect Donald Trump regarding interference in the 2020 elections be dropped.
This request comes after his victory in the presidential elections, against Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party candidate.
A few days ago, the Manhattan District Attorney announced that he would agree to postpone the sentencing of Donald Trump in the “hush money” case.
He stated that it is unlikely that Trump will be sentenced “even after the end of the defendant’s next presidential term.”
TikTok in America
The US Department of Justice also previously stated in a lawsuit filed that the video sharing application, TikTok, and its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, failed to prevent children from joining the platform and illegally collecting their personal data.
The Department, in cooperation with the Federal Trade Commission, filed a civil lawsuit, alleging violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.
