Panama rejects Trump’s threat to regain control of the canal

The President of Panama, José Raul Molino, today, Monday, rejected the threat of US President-elect Donald Trump to regain control of this corridor between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Without mentioning Trump by name, Molino said in a video clip On the "X" platform The Canal is not controlled by China, the European Community, the United States, or any other power, either directly or indirectly, and as a Panamanian, I strongly reject any expression that distorts this fact.
The announcement by the President of Panama comes after a threat he made. Yesterday, Trump wrote on his private social media network, Truth Social.
Trump wrote: “Our navy and our trade are being treated unfairly. The (traffic) fees imposed by Panama Ridiculous,” adding that “this plundering of our country will stop immediately.”
The Republican said that the management of the canal belongs to Panama alone, not to China or to any other party. We have not and will never let it fall into the wrong hands.

He stressed that if Panama is unable to guarantee the safe, efficient and reliable operation of this water route, we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us in full and without discussion.
The Panamanian President responded by demanding respect. His country, stressing that every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent areas belongs to Panama and will remain part of it, adding that our country’s sovereignty and independence are non-negotiable.
Despite Trump’s statements, Molyneux hopes to have a good and respectful relationship with the administration. The new American canal, to address issues such as illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
