Investigations reveal dangerous behind the scenes of the Azerbaijani plane crash
Western experts and media believe that it was caused by a Russian missile, while Russia confirmed on Friday that the plane was being attacked by Ukrainian drones that day amid “dense fog.”
Azerbaijani plane crash investigations
Azerbaijan Airlines announced on Friday the suspension of flights to seven Russian cities, most of them in the Caucasus, attributing its decision to “the preliminary results of the investigation into the Embraer 190 crash and the risks to flight security.”
It revealed later Friday, in an updated version of its announcement of the suspension of flights to Russian cities, that “the preliminary results of the investigation into the Embraer 190 crash” indicate “foreign material and technical interference.”
Azerbaijani MP Rasim Musabekov explained, “An investigation is under way to find out whether a strike on Russian air defenses was behind the incident or another reason.”
He continued: “We see in the pictures and recordings circulating there holes on the plane’s fuselage that are usually attributed to air defense missiles.”
Azerbaijani plane crash
This Embraer 190 plane was on a flight between the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, and Grozny, carrying 67 passengers, and it crashed in circumstances that are still mysterious.
It caught fire near Aktau overlooking the Caspian Sea in western Kazakhstan, far from its original course, in an accident that claimed the lives of 38 people, according to the authorities of this Central Asian country.
While experts and Western media are discussing the hypothesis of an accident resulting from the launch of a Russian anti-aircraft missile, the Kremlin refused to comment on the incident on Friday before the investigation ended.
Ukrainian military marches
The Russian Aviation Authority, Rosaviatsia, said that the situation at Grozny Airport that day was “very difficult,” while the agency’s director, Dmitry Yadrov, wrote that “Ukrainian military drones were at that time launching terrorist attacks on civilian facilities in the cities of Grozny and Vladikavkaz” (Vladikavkaz). .
He announced that “dense fog” was obstructing visibility “at an altitude of 500 meters,” noting that “the pilot of the plane tried to land twice in Grozny, but to no avail. Other airports were offered to him, so he decided to head to Aktau Airport” in Kazakhstan.
Since Russia launched its attack on Ukraine in February 2022, Grozny has been subjected to several attacks from Ukrainian drones, and the director of “Rosaviatsia” confirmed that Russia intends to “fully cooperate with the investigation into this tragedy” with Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, two former Soviet republics with good relations with Moscow.
Circumstances of the Azerbaijani plane crash
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during a media briefing, “We consider that we are not authorized to make comments before the conclusions of the investigation.”
As for Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential office, he pointed the finger at Moscow, stressing the need for Russia to be held accountable for shooting down the Azerbaijan Airlines plane.
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev pledged, during a phone call with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev, to “examine the details of the circumstances of the incident.”
None of the countries concerned have yet officially confirmed the Russian missile hypothesis, which is fueled by photos of visible traces on the plane’s fuselage indicating that it may have been exposed to bullets as it approached its destination in Russia before heading to Kazakhstan, where it crashed.
Flocks of birds
Azerbaijan Airlines initially said that the plane flew among a flock of birds before retracting its statement, while the Russian Aviation Agency also mentioned flocks of birds as one of the possible causes of the accident.
However, many experts doubted the validity of this hypothesis, while the Minister of Transportation of Kazakhstan on Thursday touched on the hypothesis of a “balloon exploding” on the plane.
