المملكة: By 7%…a decrease in non-renewable groundwater consumption in 2023

Today, the General Authority for Statistics issued the bulletin of water accounts in the Kingdom for the year 2023. According to the results of the bulletin, agricultural consumption of non-renewable groundwater decreased by 7% in 2023, reaching 9.356 million m3.3 Compared to 2022.
While the extracted renewable groundwater constituted 21% of the total groundwater extracted in 2023, the extracted non-renewable groundwater recorded a decrease of 6% to reach 1.849 million m3.3 In 2023.
While the desalinated water produced represented 50% of the amount of water distributed in 2023, compared to 44% in 2022.

Water consumption

The results of the bulletin showed that water consumption for agricultural purposes in 2023 amounted to 12.298 million m3.3The agricultural sector’s spending represented 0.5% of the total spending on water used.
While the percentage of expenditure on water used in the industrial sector was 61.4%, while the percentage of expenditure by households on water used was 38.1%.

The results of the bulletin showed an increase in the amount of desalinated seawater supplies in 2023 by 31%, reaching 3.785 million m3.3 For the year 2023.
Desalinated seawater constitutes 22% of the total water supply from natural resources, while non-renewable groundwater constitutes 62% of the water supply from natural resources in 2023.
Reused water consumption also increased by 12%, reaching 555 million m33 Compared to 495 million m3 in 2022.
