Targeting the presidential palace in Chad
“The situation is completely under control. There is no fear,” Chad’s Foreign Minister, Abderrahmane Kalamallah, explained in a Facebook live broadcast, filmed inside an apparently quiet presidential palace, late on Wednesday.
In an interview with state television, Kalam Allah praised the vigilance of the presidential palace guards, describing the attackers as disorganized and intoxicated with alcohol and drugs.
Asked if the attack was a terrorist attack, Kalamallah said it was most likely not, because the attackers were local youth from the capital, N’Djamena.
Constitutional system in Chad
The attack occurred on the same day that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited the capital, where he congratulated Deby Itno on the re-establishment of constitutional order.
In the immediate aftermath, rumors spread online that the attack was the work of the militant group Boko Haram. Chad, with a population of about 18 million people, suffers from political turmoil before and after the controversial presidential elections.
It resulted in the victory of Deby Itno, who led the country as interim president during the period of military rule that followed the death of his father in 2021.
