Frequent earthquakes
Mexico is located between five tectonic plates, making it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, especially on the Pacific coast.
In 1985, an 8.1-magnitude earthquake destroyed a large portion of Mexico City, leaving thousands dead, and on September 19, 2017, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake killed 369 people, most of them in the capital.
On the same date in 2022, another earthquake occurred in central Mexico, just hours after millions of people participated in safety training simulating an earthquake.
