Ukraine is the most important… Details of discussions on European security issues
This comes within the framework of a new five-party coordination established after Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential elections.
Improving European security
European allies are seeking to improve European security and conflict preparedness in response to Trump’s continued weakening of US credibility in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warned against reducing military aid to Ukraine, and said: “We will support Ukraine along the way as long as it is necessary. This support will continue.”
He added: What we need is a just and lasting peace, and this should be the final result. “A peace that is not negotiated at Ukraine’s expense with anyone, but a just, sustainable and secure peace.”
Strengthening the Ukrainian defense industry
The ministers are also set to consider strengthening Ukraine’s defense industry in the long term, and said European defense companies and their supply chains can and should play an important role in this.
“Our industries, in turn, will learn from the Ukrainian experience on the battlefield regarding the application of the use of systems and weapons,” Pistorius said.
It is unclear whether or to what extent the United States will continue to provide military support to Ukraine under Trump’s leadership.
Aid to Ukraine
With one week remaining until Trump’s inauguration on January 20, European defense ministers also want to discuss providing more aid to Ukraine.
It will also be interesting to see how ministers react to Trump’s recent claims to Greenland, which belongs to Denmark, and his ambitions to annex Canada – both NATO allies.
